Control

Control group GPs will have an opportunity to participate in a CPD activity which focuses on improving the assessment and management of overweight in children attending general practice in NSW and SA.  To obtain points the audit will need to be completed by November 2019

1. Complete the training module – ‘Identification of excess weight in primary school aged children’ - use the video link below

2. Initial Non-Identified Audit

An initial non-identified audit will be conducted using Doctors Control Panel (DCP) software on all patients aged 2-13 years to determine the recording of height and weight.  This will be analysed to determine frequency of assessment and recording and the number of children whose BMI for age is >85thpercentile.  A baseline report with comments will be provided to the GP by the research team (Please see the link to the sample non-identified audit report below).

3. Identify a sample of children from your practice

Select 2-5 children with BMI for age outside the healthy range.  Provide a consultation to these children/family employing the 5As.

4. Identify and implement change

GPs will reflect on the reports

  1. Following report, GPs will be asked to reflect on what could be done to improve assessment and recording and develop a plan in their own practice to improve this.
  2. The GP will then identify and develop a plan for 2-5 children with BMI for age >85th Percentile.

5. 6 month follow up Audit

An repeat non-identified audit will be conducted using Doctors Control Panel (DCP) software on all patients aged 2-13 years to determine the recording and level of risk factors in the previous 12 months.  This will be analysed to determine frequency of assessment and proportion of children with BMI for age >85th percentile.  A report will be provided to the GP comparing it with the baseline.
