Action for Equity
Description and aims
This stream supports better and fairer health for families and communities locally, nationally and internationally. There are three research programs within this stream.
Key current research areas
Children and young people
This program focuses on understanding the needs of vulnerable families and developing and trailing interventions to improve child and young people’s health, development and educational outcomes, including individual, family and service system interventions.
Communities and Populations
This program focuses on the health and wellbeing of whole communities and populations. Research in this program is conducted with communities, populations and organisations, and address planning and policies.
Equity Implementation and Social Innovation
This program focuses on building individual, community, organisational and service system capacity to effectively implement tools and interventions to improve health and development outcomes for families and communities.
Key partners
Key partners in the stream and its research programmes are local communities (particular the Tharawal community in South Western Sydney), consumer groups and community advocates, health districts, local councils, and industry.

Projects
Place-making and its impact on health outcomes among refugees in high income contexts: A systematic review
The project is examining the association between place-making and physical and mental health outcomes including wellbeing among refugees in high-income contexts.
The Gaawaadhi Gadudha Study: Understanding how cultural resilience impacts Aboriginal health and quality of life
This project is investigating how Aboriginal cultural gatherings on sacred sites (walaays), that aim to reinforce connection to Country, ceremonial practices, food and medicine gathering/use, and language reclamation, delivered by Yuwaalaraay, Yuin, and Gamilaraay traditional knowledge holders, are linked to resilience, health and quality of life among Aboriginal peoples in Western and South Coast NSW.

Community based child health research in Sydney South West Area Health Service
This Project aims to identify reasearch related activities in SSWAHS;to identify the opportunities and barriers to developing these activities; and to identify a compendium of research related activities that could be undertaken
Effectiveness of an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Cultural Respect Program in general practice - Improving GP ways of thinking and ways of doing (WoTWoD) Aboriginal and Cross Cultural Health
The “Ways of Thinking and Ways of Doing (WoTWoD)” program and toolkit was developed to guide and effect a whole-of-practice clinical re-design process to embed cultural respect in general practice. This multi-centre randomized control trial will test the effectiveness of the WoTWoD program and the toolkit.
Equity Focussed Health Impact Assessment
A consortium led by the Newcastle Institute of Public Health sought funding to develop a HIA tool that had a specific focus on health inequity and to pilot this tool in five sites
Evaluating the Impact and Effectiveness of Equity Focused HIA
A case study of the conditions under which EFHIA is most effective in influencing decision-making and the implementation of projects, plans or policies.
