New project—Effectiveness of an Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Cultural Respect Program in general practice

Aboriginal people comprise 2.5% of Australia's population, with 60% urban dwellers with poor access to health care. Poor access to care is reflected through disparities in health status and health outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. Despite various strategies to close this gap inequities still persist. The project aims at addressing this issue at general practice level.

Opening of Waranwarin Child and Family Centre and Close the Gap Day

On 20th March, members of the Gudaga Research Team attended the Tharawal celebrations for Closing the Gap Day. This year they were held at the Waranwarin Child and Family Centre and were combined with the official opening of the Waranwarin Centre. This day is an opportunity for the Aboriginal community to come together and celebrate their work towards building a strong, healthy Aboriginal community on Tharawal Lands.

In February-March, The Centre for Obesity Management and Prevention Research Excellence in Primary Health Care (COMPaRE-PHC) hosted a visit from Professor Iain Broom, who is Director of the Centre for Obesity Research and Epidemiology (CORE) at Robert Gordon University. He is also Medical Director of LighterLife, holds a Professorial Research Fellowship at the Rowett Research Centre and is a founding European SCOPE Fellow. Professor Broom has been responsible, along with several UK colleagues, for the development of the Counterweight program of which he is Chairman.
