Research Priorities Forum - Research Priorities for Central and Eastern Sydney

Posted 14 May 2018

Over 30 people attended the half day research priorities forum on Thursday, 22 March 2018 organised by the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity, UNSW in collaboration with Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) and Central and Eastern Sydney Primary Health Network (CESPHN).

The purpose of the day was: to build on the Central and Eastern Sydney (CES) primary and community health research priorities identified at the previous workshop; to have a shared understanding of the CES Primary and Community Heath Cohort/Linkage Resource (CES-P&CH) including past achievements and future opportunities to answer questions relevant to CES; and to identify a program of research that could be undertaken over the next 1-3 years using CES-P&CH with/without enhancements to meet the identified priorities in CES.

The workshop was chaired by Professor Mark Harris, Executive Director, CPHCE and started with presentations from A/Prof Margo Barr, CES-P&CH Project Leader at CPHCE, Prof Jean-Frédéric Levesque, the Chief Executive of the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation, Dr Greg Stewart, Director, Primary and Integrated Health for SESLHD, Ms Miranda Shaw, A/Executive Director, Clinical Services Integration & Population Health for SLHD and Dr Shona Dutton, Health of Planning, Strategy & Evaluation for CESPHN (see links to the presentations below).

These presentations were followed by small group discussions—to develop broad research themes, research priorities within those themes and to see how the CES-P&CH could be used to address them—and a panel discussion which included all the speakers.

The final research priorities identified were aged care, medication use, isolation, interaction between physical and mental health and care co-ordination. Three to four research questions will be developed for each of these priority areas—applying primary health care, feasibility and policy relevance lenses—and 4 to 5 will be selected as the CES-P&CH research projects for 2018.
