Smoking has been causally linked to greater incidence of infectious respiratory diseases in the US Surgeon General’s report of 2004 and more recently with SARS, MERS and H1N1 and often linked to poorer outcomes. While the benefits of smoking cessation in ‘well populations’ have been well recognised, there is emerging evidence that smoking cessation at any stage, post serious disease, provides significant survival benefits. Yet the role of smoking and cessation in infectious respiratory disease has been largely overlooked.

Self management support for chronic conditions

Self management support is a the component of the Chronic Care Model with the strongest evidence. However most of this evidence relates to single conditions, for motivated individuals with relatively high health literacy. Patients with complex and multiple conditions, with poor health literacy and engagement in their care present a particular challenge in primary health care.
This workshop discussed approaches to addressing some of these challenges in a variety of primary health care settings, with sopecific reference to kidney disease and diabetes.
Health Impact Assessment and Infrastructure Opportunities for the health sector

The second Health Impact Assessment Unit Workshop for 2019 will focus on health impact assessment and infrastructure projects.
The program will be made up of a presentation by Ben Cave, a health impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment practitioner from the UK, followed by a facilitated workshop discussion on implications and opportunities for the health sector.
