Rationale
The Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care commissioned CPHCE undertake a secondary analysis of data from a Commonwealth Fund international study of quality and safety in primary care in nine countries, for which the Commission had led the Australian arm.
Aims
The aim of this work was be to:
- Describe in more detail the organisation and functioning of Australian general practices in relation to quality and safety;
- Identify the practitioner and practice characteristics that are associated with different levels of capacity and performance in relation to quality and safety;
- Compare quality and safety in Australian practices with comparable practices/practitioners in other countries in the survey;
- Identify possible strategies for improving quality and safety in Australian general practice;.
Design and Method
Secondary analysis was performed on a survey of primary care practitioners which was conducted by the Commonwealth Fund in 2009 in 11 countries. 10,470 (response rate 33%) completed the survey. 1,016 general practitioners responded in Australia (response rate 52%). Univariate and logistic regression analysis of factors associated with use of guidelines.
